With “Kim”, the Freie Bühne Wieden will be bringing an innovative and touching play to the stage from January 2025, which is aimed equally at young people and adults. The work of the Austrian author Flo Staffelmayr addresses the balancing act between humanity and technology, loneliness and relationships – and takes a look into the world of tomorrow. The production, directed by Michaela Ehrenstein, promises a captivating examination of current and timeless questions in our society.

The story focuses on sixteen-year-old Lotte, who is forced to leave her home and start a new life in a strange city. In order to make ends meet, she takes a job at the institute run by the eccentric Professor Wilhelm. He is working on a groundbreaking development: an artificial intelligence that is intended to support people as a social companion.

This AI is called “Kim” and is initially viewed skeptically by Lotte. But Kim not only impresses with her attractive appearance, but also with surprisingly sensitive conversations. An unusual relationship develops between Lotte and Kim, which gives Lotte comfort and guidance. Is there a connection between man and machine? And what responsibility do people have towards the technology that creates? The piece unfolds as an exploration of these questions, offering no easy answers but encouraging the audience to think.

A sensitive production with a stronger cast

The production is directed by Michaela Ehrenstein, whose sensitive direction emphasizes the emotional facets of the characters. Martin Gesslbauer’s stage depicts a minimalist, futuristic world that creates space for the characters’ inner conflicts.

Barbara Edinger gives Lotte a fragile strength that captivates the audience. Her portrayal of loneliness and growing up is nuanced and moving. Katrin Fuchs embodies Kim, the artificial intelligence, with fascinating ambivalence: sometimes she seems frighteningly perfect, sometimes almost humanly vulnerable. Kurt Hexmann as Professor Wilhelm brings a bizarre but also profound note to the play and asks the ethical questions that illuminate the scientific background of the drama.

A piece that connects generations

“Kim” is not only a story about the relationship between man and machine, but also a universal story about friendship, loneliness and the search for a place in the world. The youthful themes of self-discovery, insecurity and the desire for connection are combined with a philosophical reflection on the future of technology.

The first reactions after the start of rehearsals are consistently positive: young people will identify with Lotte’s feelings and her search for orientation, while adults can enjoy the deeper level of the piece and the ethical questions. The cleverly integrated music enhances the emotional depth and also offers nostalgic moments for older viewers.

The premiere took place on January 14, 2025, followed by further performances until January 29. The piece will be shown exclusively at the Freie Bühne Wieden in Vienna. Tickets are already on sale and the limited number of seats guarantees an intimate theater experience.

Flo Staffelmayr, the renowned playwright of the younger generation, is known as “Kim” in “Challenges and Opportunities of Technological Empowerment.” At the same time, he tells a deeply human story that resonates regardless of age or previous knowledge. As director, Michaela Ehrenstein brings her many years of experience to the project and creates a production that conveys intimacy and breadth at the same time.

The collaboration with Katrin Fuchs, Barbara Edinger and Kurt Hexmann – three actors who impress on stage with equal precision and emotion – makes this production a highlight of the 2025 Vienna theater season.
