The largest folk festival in the world, the Munich Oktoberfest, attracts millions of visitors every year. But the Bavarian tradition is no longer just celebrated on the Munich festival grounds. People also celebrate high above the clouds – and for years now with a kissing tradition: the Lufthansa traditional costume crew.
For years, it has been a tradition at Lufthansa that the flight attendants wear dirndls and traditional costumes instead of the classic uniforms during the Oktoberfest period. The costume, which was specially developed for the long-haul crew, comes from the Munich-based traditional costume specialist Angermaier and is made to measure.
Bavarian cosiness in the Lufthansa lounges
Lufthansa is also not skimping on the ground and is bringing Oktoberfest to the festively decorated lounges of the Terminal 2 in Munich Airport. The starting signal is given, as on the Theresienwiese, with the famous tapping of the keg, accompanied by traditional Bavarian beers and a selection of hearty dishes that create a real Oktoberfest atmosphere. In the Business and Senator lounges, passengers can enjoy Munich potato soup, roast pork and steamed dumplings with vanilla sauce. The two First Class lounges also offer exclusive Bavarian specialties such as duck breast and sweet Oktoberfest delicacies. But that’s not all: after a long day at the Oktoberfest or a strenuous flight, guests can refresh themselves with the so-called « After Oktoberfest Drinks », including a ginger shot that provides new energy.
The celebrations don’t end on the ground, however. Lufthansa also serves typical Bavarian cuisine in its aircraft above the clouds. Various Bavarian specialties will be served on selected long-haul flights from Frankfurt and Munich until the end of September. The offering ranges from classic roast chicken to mushroom ragout with pretzel dumplings to the ever-popular roasted almonds and Oktoberfest chocolates. Even in Premium Economy and Economy Class, passengers can look forward to Bavarian delicacies such as Nuremberg bratwurst with Bavarian cabbage and mashed potatoes. The culinary experience in all classes is rounded off with the typical Bavarian dessert, Bavarian cream, which is served with raspberries.
Drinks with Bavarian flair: The Lufthansa Cocktail
Of course, a real Oktoberfest also requires the right drinks. In addition to traditional Bavarian beers, there is another special treat for passengers on European routes: the Lufthansa Cocktail, which is offered in a limited « Avionic Wiesn Edition ». This aperitif is a tribute to the Bavarian autumn and impresses with its fruity mixture of peach, citrus fruits and wild meadow herbs, rounded off with the fine taste of marigold.
In order to preserve the Oktoberfest atmosphere even after landing, Lufthansa has come up with something special. On long-haul flights, passengers in Premium Economy, Business and First Class receive the amenities of the in-flight service in specially designed heart-shaped Oktoberfest bags. These bags, which contain toothbrushes and other travel items, are not only practical, but also a nice souvenir that is perfect for a visit to the Oktoberfest.
