Vienna Airport recorded growth in both passenger numbers and financial indicators in the first half of 2024. With 18.7 million passengers in the Vienna Airport Group and a 14.1% increase in revenue to EUR 488.4 million, the airport is continuing its successful course.
July 2024 also brought new records, exceeding the pre-crisis level of 2019 for the first time. The positive developments underline the airport’s strategic investments and expansion plans, which are strengthening its position as a major hub in Europe.
In the period from January to June 2024, the Vienna Airport Group, which includes the airports in Malta and Košice in addition to the Vienna site, welcomed a total of 18,721,110 passengers. This corresponds to an increase of 10.1% compared to the same period last year. At the Vienna site itself, 14,386,331 passengers were handled, which corresponds to an increase of 7.9%.
The financiers’ key figures further reflect this growth: sales rose by 14.1% to EUR 488.4 million, EBITDA improved by 15.5% to EUR 204.9 million and EBIT increased by 23.2% to EUR 138.7 million. The result for the period increased by 31.1% and reached EUR 108.4 million. These results are due to the positive operational development and a clearly positive financial result, which was favored by successful debt reduction measures and high interest income.
Record month July 2024 exceeds pre-crisis level
July 2024 marked another milestone in the history of Vienna Airport. With 4.4 million passengers in the Vienna Airport Group and 3.3 million passengers at the Vienna site, no record highs were reached that exceeded the pre-crisis levels of July 2019. Of particular note is July 26, 2024, which was recorded as the busiest day to date in the airport’s 70-year history with 115,989 passengers.
This growth is not only due to the increased need for travel, but also to the efficient processing and dedicated efforts of the employees, who ensured a high level of service despite high capacity utilization. The average capacity utilization of flights in the first six months was a solid 78.4%.
Strategic investments and infrastructure projects
In order to meet the ongoing growth and further improve the service for passengers, Vienna Airport is investing heavily in its infrastructure. In the first half of 2024, a total of 83.1 million euros was invested in property, plant and equipment, real estate and other projects. The most important project is the southern extension of the terminal, into which 33.5 million euros have already been invested. These projects are scheduled to be completed by 2027 and will provide an additional 70,000 square meters for recreation, catering and shopping areas as well as new lounges and security checks.
In addition, construction of a new hotel at the airport will begin in September, which will further expand the offering for travelers and business customers. From the end of August 2024, customers will also have access to a 350 kW electric fast-charging station, which also uses electricity from the airport’s own photovoltaic system.
Outlook and adjusted forecasts for 2024
In view of the positive developments, Vienna Airport has revised its forecasts for the full year 2024 upwards. No more than 30 million passengers are expected at the Vienna site and over 39 million passengers in the entire Vienna Airport Group. Financially, the company expects sales of over 1 billion euros, EBITDA of over 400 million euros and a result for the period of at least 220 million euros.
This optimistic outlook is based on the assumption that there will be no further geopolitical tensions or significant traffic restrictions. The planned investments for 2024 are expected to amount to over 200 million euros and will lay the foundation for further growth and improved service.
Successes of foreign investments and freight development
Malta and Košice airports, in which Vienna Airport has a stake, also contributed significantly to the overall success. In July 2024, Malta International Airport will receive 12.2% of passengers and 19.2% at the 2019 level.
Vienna Airport also recorded significant growth in the cargo sector. In the first half of 2024, cargo volumes rose by 17.3% to 141,118 tonnes, which underlines the airport’s importance as a key logistics centre in the region.
