aviation: Forest fires: FAA restricts flight operations in New York

On June 7, 2023, the United States Civil Aviation Administration reduced and slowed air traffic out of New York metropolitan airports. The background is that visibility was severely impaired due to the forest fires.

The main areas affected were La Guardia and Newark, where there were numerous delays and cancellations. John F. Kennedy Airport was also affected, although the extent at this airport was much smaller. The same was true for Stewart International Airport.

Since June 6, 2023, smoke from wildfires in central Canada has plagued the east coast of the United States. The smoke closed schools, disrupted businesses, delayed flights and caused smoke inhalation among residents.

A statement by the FAA reads, among other things, that they have fully prepared for the fact that the operations of airports and airlines have to be adapted to the needs. This also includes the fact that, under certain circumstances, temporary settings or blocks are possible for security reasons.
