aviation: Blocked ticket funds: Nigeria releases $64 million

Numerous airlines are no longer flying to Nigeria because, according to IATA, the government is blocking around $792 million in ticket revenue.

Now the central bank’s leadership is said to have refused to release at least $61.64 million. Several local reports are part of the government’s aim to clear the backlog of outstanding foreign exchange in deposit-taking banks.

According to IATA, Nigeria tops the list of blocked airline funds, but this is not an isolated case. In a total of 20 countries, airlines repeatedly have problems getting the proceeds from the ticket money sold in the respective country. As of October 2023, a total of $1.94 billion is said to have been blocked.
